Non-Surgical Gum Treatment
The best way to prevent perodontal (gum) disease is through good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing help to remove the sticky film of bacteria (plaque) that form in the mouth. If this bacteria is not removed, it can then lead to an infection of the gum tissue. This infection is known as periodontal disease.
If we determine that you have periodontal disease, the treatment can vary depending on how far the disease has progressed. If caught in the early stages, a simple procedure can be done called scaling and root planning, also known as a "deep cleaning". This is a non-surgical technique that removes plaque and calculus (tarter) below the gum line. This procedure will generally stablize the periodontal infection that is limited to the gum tissue and not yet advanced into the bone.
With prompt treatment, proper home care, and regular dental visits, most patients will not require any further treatment. However, non-surgical gum therapy does have its limitations. If periodontal health is not achieved a referral to a periodontist may be suggested.
