Porcelain veneers are custom designed shells of tooth-like ceramic material that, when applied over the surface of a tooth to greatly improve appearance. A composite resin material is bonded to the tooth in order to fill in a chip or a crack. But for more severe cases of discoloration, wear, uneven teeth or gaps between teeth, porcelain veneers may be recommended as a more appropriate solution.
The placement of dental veneers usually requires slight “shaping’ or “prepping” of all teeth being fitted with the custom designed shells. Once veneers are bonded into place, they are relatively strong and durable; however care must be taken so as not to abuse veneers because the thin porcelain shells can damage or break. When we place veneers on our patients that are prone to grinding we may recommend a night guard.
